Facts About Deep Hole Drilling

Human beings have engaged in the process of drilling holes for long period now. Initially, the methods used were basic and not very effective. However, as a result of technological advancements, deep hole drilling methods have advanced a lot. It is currently possible to reach great depths very fast and less costly. Drilling operations are also currently done on a much larger scale as before.

Hole drilling is done for several different reasons. In most cases, this process is done to extract natural resources that exist at great depths underground. Some of these natural resources include natural gas, petroleum, ground water, and brine. Holes may also be drilled in order to inject fluid from the surface to subsurface reservoirs. Scientists also engage in this operation in order to study and monitor subsurface formations. When the intention is to explore natural resources, the process is called borehole drilling.

The main purpose of excavating holes initially was to extract water. The holes were dug in areas with shallow water tables and as such, the holes were only shallow and very wide. To prevent the holes from collapsing back in, the sides were lined with masonry or wooden walls. This reduced accidents and increased the life span of the wells.

Well drilling can be done manually or mechanically as deemed suitable. Manual options are more cheap and less complex while mechanical ones can be very sophisticated and expensive. Modern methods make use of long drill shafts for the operation. This kinds of drill shafts allow holes made to be deeper and narrower in a way that it would not be able to achieve if manual methods are used.

Given the large number of drill bits in existence today, it can be a little challenging to choose one. However, there are many holes drilled around the world and they provide a basis for making the choice. When working in a place where there is already a hole, the hole is studied to make a choice of drill bits to use. The bits can also be changed underway the process.

Two main kinds of drill bits are in existence today, that is, roller cone and fixed cutter. In fixed cutter drill bit, the equipment is composed of no moving parts. Instead, the drilling occurs as a result of various forces such as abrasion, shearing, and scrapping being applied to the rock. These bits are made from grit hotpressed inserts, natural diamond, or polycrystalline diamond compact.

On the other hand, roller drill bit is composed of moving parts and drilling occurs as a result of movement applied against the rock. These kinds of bits are made from tungsten carbide inserts or milled tooth. Tungsten carbide inserts is used for harder formations while milled tooth is preferred for softer rocks formations.

The two kinds of bits have different versions of themselves. Each version is manufactured differently and comprises of different composites depending on the drilling situation it is meant for. Efficiency in the bits can be improved greatly by adding enhancements as needed to suit the situation.
